Gemstone comparison FAQ

Does the hardest stone automatically win?

No. Mohs hardness describes scratch resistance on a scale with uneven steps. Toughness, cleavage, stability, treatments and the setting affect practical durability. Topaz can be hard and still vulnerable to a sharp blow; the number is not a tiny suit of armor.

Can two differently named gems share a mineral family?

Yes. Ruby and sapphire belong to corundum, while amethyst and citrine are quartz varieties. Conversely, a broad trade name can cover distinct materials: jadeite and nephrite are both called jade.

Does the table identify my actual specimen?

No. Catalogue descriptions cannot establish identity, treatment, natural or synthetic origin, or authenticity. Those questions may need documentation and appropriate gemological testing.

Will every specimen show the listed colors and effects?

No. Colors vary, and a star, cat's-eye, sheen, glitter or fluorescence can depend on the specimen, cut, orientation and lighting. Optical possibilities are possibilities, not promises.

Does the comparison approve a cleaning method?

No. Material-specific references provide a starting point. Coatings, filling, dye, assembly, string, settings and damage can change the complete-piece care routine. Mineral reference pages do not automatically supply a cleaning recipe.

Can I compare price or investment value here?

The tool supplies no price estimate or investment score. Appearance, size, quality, treatment, documentation and the actual market affect a purchase. A large hardness number does not arrive with a guaranteed resale department.
