BEFORE YOUR GEM GETS A SPA APPOINTMENT

Gem Care & Safety Checker

Your gemstone may enjoy attention. It has not necessarily requested steam, salt or an afternoon in the oven.

Choose the material. Check the method. Keep the sparkle.

Explore 60 gem and mineral entries across 13 care questions. Get a practical handling path that considers treatment, construction and condition, with references and related reading.

This is care triage for a named material, not specimen identification or a guarantee that a complete jewelry piece is compatible with a method. Published cleaning recommendations are distinguished from a minimal surface-care default where specimen information is incomplete.

Gem care FAQ

Is hardness a cleaning permission slip?

No. Hardness describes scratch resistance. Cleavage, fractures, stability, treatment and the setting also matter. Topaz can be hard and still vulnerable to blows; a large Mohs number is not a tiny suit of armor.

Why do rose quartz and amethyst get different machine advice?

GIA advises avoiding ultrasound and steam for rose quartz. For sound amethyst, ultrasound may be suitable when disqualifying treatments are absent, while steam is not recommended. A family name does not replace variety-specific advice.

Why does emerald need treatment information?

Surface-reaching fractures may be filled with oil or resin. Steam and ultrasound can affect fractures or filling. Gentle manual care is the preferred path; the stone is allowed to decline the spa upgrade.

Can I use sunlight for symbolic charging?

Symbolic meaning does not establish physical compatibility. Intense light or the heat it creates can affect some colors, treatments or materials. Use a cool indoor, no-contact ritual arrangement when the physical care conditions are uncertain.

Is a brief wash the same as soaking?

No. Longer immersion can affect absorbent material, finishes, string, adhesive or matrix. A wash recommendation is not permission to leave the whole piece in water overnight.

What about gypsum sold as selenite?

Gypsum is very soft. Clear selenite and fibrous satin spar are different habits, often sold under the same loose trade name. The default here is minimal dry care rather than soaking.

Can I clean an opal doublet like a solid opal?

Do not assume so. Adhesives, backing, absorbency and treatments can change the method. Confirm the construction and use the maker's instructions; the opal subtype field helps prevent one universal bath recommendation.

Does a dry-care default mean water destroys that mineral?

No. It means this lookup has not established a suitable wet procedure for the exact finished piece or specimen. Identity, finish, attached minerals and condition still matter. The tool distinguishes that uncertainty from an explicit method to avoid.

Can the checker approve crystal drinking water?

No. Decorative stones are not approved here for direct drinking-water contact. Keep the stone outside the vessel for any symbolic arrangement, and use ordinary food-contact equipment for the water.

Can I save or print the plan?

Yes. Entries are saved in this browser on this device; they do not sync or monitor changing condition. Reinspect before a new check. Printing gives you the result, including its steps and material references.

Named material-specific care pages are used where available. Mineral reference entries establish identity and properties; they do not automatically authorize a cleaning recipe. Follow complete-piece manufacturer instructions and professional advice for valuable, damaged or unusual specimens.
