Start with the Flaw, Not the Stone
An opal rarely arrives perfect. Almost every solid opal contains some internal feature: a sand spot, a hairline crack, a patch of potch that does not play color, a cloudy zone, a tiny surface pit, a fracture filled with resin. The practical buying question is not whether a flaw exists but whether that specific flaw changes how the stone looks face-up, how it will hold up in the setting you intend, and whether the price reflects its real place in the market. Two stones with the same defect can sit at very different points on the value scale, because the same feature that ruins one opal is a routine, accepted characteristic in another.
This matters most when you are comparing a larger, more colorful opal with a smaller, cleaner one, or when an online listing shows a stone under strong light and you cannot tell whether a dark line is a reflection, a crack, or a color bar. The decision framework below is built around three filters: where the flaw sits, what it does to appearance, and what it does to structural risk.
Opal Does Not Use Diamond Clarity Rules
Diamond grading treats any inclusion as a clarity deduction because diamonds are expected to be transparent and relatively inclusion-free. Opal is a hydrated, amorphous silica material, not a crystal, and it forms in sedimentary and volcanic environments that routinely trap sand, clay, iron oxide, and host rock. In precious opal, the feature that determines value is play-of-color: the diffraction of light from stacked silica spheres. Clarity in the diamond sense is secondary.
That does not mean flaws are irrelevant. It means you judge a blemish against what the stone is supposed to do. A solid black opal with intense rolling flash and a small dark sand spot near the base may still be a strong stone. A pale white opal with the same sand spot dead center and visible through a transparent face may be badly compromised.
The Three Filters: Location, Interference, Structural Risk
Location
Position is often the single most important variable. A flaw at the edge, under a bezel, on the back of a doublet or triplet, or beneath the girdle of a cabochon can be invisible in normal wear. A flaw in the center of the face-up area competes with the color pattern directly. When you look at a listing or a loose stone, ask where the feature falls relative to the direction the stone will be viewed from once set.
Interference with the color pattern
A flaw matters less if it sits in a black or dark patch of potch that already contributes nothing to the display. It matters more if it cuts across a bright color bar, breaks a harlequin pattern, or creates a dead spot in an otherwise uniform field of flash. Directionality matters too. Opal color often changes with tilt; a crack that disappears at one angle may become a dark line across the best pattern at another.
Structural risk
Opal is relatively soft, roughly 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and it is brittle because it contains water and is not strongly bonded in all directions. Cracks, crazing, and existing fractures are the flaws most likely to worsen. Sand spots, color voids, and potch patches are generally stable. This distinction separates cosmetic flaws from durability concerns.
Which Flaws Usually Do Not Matter Much
- Sand spots and small host-rock inclusions in stable positions, especially near the edge or back. Common in Australian and Ethiopian material and often priced into the stone.
- Potch patches that do not reduce the visible play-of-color. Black potch behind a color bar can even improve contrast.
- Pinpoint pits or small surface irregularities on the back or under a bezel.
- Colour zoning that produces a banded or directional pattern, as long as it is part of the design and not a dead, milky area.
In these cases, the question is not whether to buy but whether the asking position reflects the cosmetic issue. If the seller presents a stone as top-grade while it has a visible center sand spot, that is a disclosure and pricing issue, not a gemological one.
Which Flaws Usually Do Matter
- Cracks that reach the surface, particularly across the face or through the dome of a cabochon. These can propagate with thermal change, setting stress, or accidental impact.
- Crazing, the fine network of surface cracks that can develop in opal that has dried or been exposed to sudden temperature change. Crazing is generally not reversible and tends to worsen.
- Large fractures filled with resin or oil, which may be stable in the short term but raise questions about long-term appearance and care.
- Cloudy or milky zones that dull the play-of-color across a significant part of the face.
- Dead spots in an otherwise vivid pattern, which lower the perceived quality of the display even if structurally harmless.

Doublets, Triplets, and the Flaw You Cannot See
Some flaws are hidden by construction rather than by position. A doublet is a thin layer of precious opal glued to a black backing, and a triplet adds a clear quartz or glass cap. These assembled stones can look excellent and can be legitimate purchases, but the bond line is a structural feature. If the glue fails or moisture enters, the stone can separate or haze. Disclosure matters here: a doublet sold as solid opal is a different product with a different value profile. The same logic applies to treated opal, including resin-impregnated or sugar-acid treated material, which can improve apparent colour and stability but is not equivalent to untreated solid opal.
If the listing does not state whether the stone is solid, doublet, or triplet, that is a disclosure gap worth resolving before purchase.
What You Can and Cannot Judge from Photographs
Photographs can show the presence of a dark feature but rarely prove what it is. A hairline crack, a colour bar boundary, a reflection from the dome, and a sand spot can look similar in a compressed image. Magnified photographs exaggerate the size and severity of every inclusion. Highly saturated images and strong studio lighting can also make play-of-color look more intense than it appears in ordinary room light. When a seller supplies video, look for tilt and slow rotation; when both video and stills are supplied under different lighting, compare them. If the flaw is the deciding factor, ask for a close, unmagnified image under neutral light and confirm whether the feature reaches the surface.
When to Ask for a Laboratory Report
Laboratory reports for opal are less standardized than for diamonds, and not every laboratory offers the same services. A report can help with identity, treatment disclosure, and in some cases origin opinion, but it will not normally grade a flaw as acceptable or unacceptable for your purposes and it is not an appraisal. For higher-value solid opal, particularly black opal with a significant price attached, a report from a recognized laboratory that addresses treatment status and identity is useful. If a seller refuses to provide one or cites a report that cannot be verified, treat that as a reason to slow down rather than as proof of a problem. The report also does not tell you whether a crack will spread in your setting.
Setting, Wear, and the Flaw That Becomes a Problem Later
A structurally stable opal in a pendant or earring sees far less stress than one in a ring worn daily. A bezel setting can protect a fragile edge, but it also hides part of the stone, so a flaw under the bezel does not affect appearance. A prong setting exposes more of the stone and also exposes any surface-reaching crack to impact. For rings, keep in mind that opal is softer and more brittle than quartz or corundum, so a stone with an existing fracture is a poorer candidate for everyday wear regardless of how beautiful it looks in the hand.
Making the Decision
If the flaw is cosmetic, located away from the face-up view, and does not reach the surface, it is usually acceptable when the price reflects it. If the flaw interferes with the colour pattern in a visible way, negotiate or move on. If the flaw is a crack, crazing, or a fracture that reaches the surface, treat it as a durability issue and weigh whether the jewellery format can tolerate it. Buyers who prioritize appearance can accept stable cosmetic inclusions. Buyers who prioritize long-term wear and fewer surprises should favour cleaner solid opal, accept a smaller or less intense stone within the same budget, and verify treatment status and construction before committing.
